Parents Center: Toilet Training In Three Easy Steps (age 3 to 4)

Toilet training doesn't have to be a tug of war between you and your preschooler. If you know when to start and what to do, it can be easy. Here's how you can best help your child tackle toilet training:

Ready

Some kids start toilet training around age 2. Others don't start until age 4. What accounts for the wide age range in mastering this skill? It's mostly a matter of physical and emotional readiness. To make sure your child is ready, check out this helpful article:

Once your toddler is physically ready, be careful not to pressure her to use the potty. When she's ready to learn this new skill, she will. Read on for tips on the best ways to toilet train boys and girls:

Now that your child is ready to begin toilet training, you can introduce a potty chair or a special seat that attaches to your toilet. A footstool to keep feet from dangling is helpful, too. Encourage your little one to get comfortable with her potty seat. Let her play with it, look inside, or pop it on her head. Have her sit, fully clothed, on her potty once a day — after breakfast or before a bath — so she gets used to it.
